Dangers in the Peace Corps

When Carol Clark was in the Peace Corps in the 80's, she thought she was going somewhere to make a difference. Instead, Carol was raped three months after she arrived in Nepal. There was a staff party where she was partaking in drinking and other fun. When she returned to her hotel room, another volunteer raped her. She reported the incident to a Peace Corps medical officer. She was pretty much brushed off. She was told that women all the time claim they were raped after they were out partying. Then, a month later, she found out she was pregnant. She said she was told that she either had to have an abortion, or leave the Corps. She came from a strict Christian family that told her she could not come home while she was pregnant. So, she had no help from her parents. She had a good friend whose parents flew her to Honolulu to have the procedure. She was raped a second time by a by a government official. She was taunted and treated like a cheap prostitute. It was a horrible experience for her. She said this has happened to other women over the years, and they were treated just as she was.
She should have been helped instead of being treated like she was the problem. She also said that she would have been treated better if she had been a tourist. I feel awful for this woman. I would have felt really betrayed by my family also. I could not imagine not having my families support in a time of need.
This incident makes me think of what else goes on. Is it safe or not? I understand there are some dangers, but to be in danger with fellow volunteers, that is too much. Carol has not gotten justice as of today and probably will not. What a sad story. I am sure it is a problem that will not be taken care of completely.
